ARM’s 2023 Annual Report Graphic Designer - Terms of Reference

Title: Graphic Designer

Coordinates with: Head of Programs/Interim Co-ED and ARM Management Consultant

Payment: as per contract

Start/End Dates: 1 April to approximately 15 May, 2024

Organizational Overview:

The Anti-Racism Movement (ARM) is a local NGO established in 2011 by a group of activists who work together with migrant workers to secure social, economic, and gender justice for all migrant workers and racialized groups in Lebanon. Project:

ARM is producing its 2023 annual report to highlight our advocacy, programs, casework, and Migrant Community Center activities for the last year. The report also contextualizes the situation of migrant workers in Lebanon in 2023, living both under the Kafala system and constant and ongoing crises, and contributes to our knowledge building work to promote fundamental change. The report is for a wide audience, including the public, migrant worker groups, policy experts, and funders.

Purpose and Scope of Work:

We are seeing an experienced, professional Graphic Designer to produce all aspects of design for the 2023 annual report, including layout, infographic design, photo editing, accessibility, and potentially illustrations. The Designer will help ARM visually communicate the urgency and importance of our work, and ensure the report is easily readable and accessible for a range of audiences.

The output is primarily a digital report, which may also be printed. In addition, infographics and illustrations from the report may be used as standalone components. The report text is currently being finalized, but we estimate the report to be no more than 30 pages once designed.

The report will be in English, potentially with aspects of the report then translated into other languages. If this happens, the contract may be amended and extended to include the design of translated components.

Please note that there is a hard deadline of early/mid May to complete the report.

Responsibilities:

1. Review the draft text of the report, organizational design standards, available photos and graphics, and past annual report designs.
2. Submit test pages to ARM staff of various design options/approaches, to decide together on a final design aesthetic, before fully developing the content.
3. Design a variety of infographics (charts, timelines, etc) as well as artwork/illustrations.
4. Complete multiple drafts of the full layout/design of the report (suitable for publication in both offline and online formats), incorporating feedback and edits from ARM staff.
5. Coordinate and meet regularly with ARM staff.
6. Strictly adhere to all timelines agreed upon

1. Requirements and skills:

1. At least 5 years of professional experience in graphic design or equivalent field. A degree in Design, Fine Arts, or a similar field is a plus but not required.
2. Excellent knowledge and familiarity with design software and technologies such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop.
3. Ability to work quickly, communicate effectively, and meet deadlines on time
4. Experience with anti-racist and feminist organizations or NGOs is a plus
5. Priority given to designers in Lebanon and the region

ARM commits to:

1. Providing the necessary context, information, text, and resources during the consultancy.
2. Leading on all admin, logistics, and tasks required to finalize the report.
3. Acting as the focal point of communication amongst different individuals.
4. Providing ongoing feedback on the design process and approach as needed.
